Stereofame Artist of the Month, February 2010: Stephen Vickers

If good things come to those who wait, then Nashville-based rocker Stephen Vickers must finally be getting his due. With a career that has taken him from his hometown of Montgomery, Alabama to Los Angeles and back to the South, the power-rock troubadour's arena-ready anthems have earned him the title of Stereofame.com's Artist of the Month for February 2010.

In a modern rock landscape dominated by half-hearted crooners clinging to what remains of the grunge movement (insert Nickelback), Vickers' self-assured baritone and honest lyrics serve as a welcome relief. While he counts late 90s alternative acts such as Matchbox Twenty and Third Eye Blind among his wide range of influences, Vickers points to his childhood as his earliest introduction to music. "Like pretty much every southerner, I grew up singing in church," Vickers said. "Towards the end of high school, I started taking the guitar more seriously. I would try to learn things like Dave Matthews songs and then just started writing my own stuff." After graduating high school, Vickers picked up and moved to Los Angeles at the urging of his good friend and fellow musician Ken Merrione. Unlike so many others who migrate West with dreams of stardom only to watch them fade beyond the horizon with the setting California sun, Vickers' rock-ballad "Give You My Life" (recorded with Merrione) caught the ears of L.A. radio station Star 98.7 and earned him and his band a spot among the top five finalists for its "Rockstar Search" contest. "That was a pretty cool experience being in L.A. and hearing my song on the radio," Vickers said. "We got to perform at the Key Club on the Sunset Strip with all these other amazing bands."

After the untimely passing of his friend and mentor Merrione (and much soul searching), Vickers moved to Nashville to return to his Southern roots and reinvigorate his songwriting. These days, Vickers is busy working on new material that he hopes to release later this year. "Describing the new songs to people I tell them to imagine if Rob Thomas wrote an album for Chris Daughtry and it was produced by Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic," he said.

No doubt, Vickers will have a whole new group of fans eagerly awaiting his latest offerings as a result of his selection as Artist of the Month. Vickers praised Stereofame as a unique platform through which his music can reach a worldwide audience. "It's a lot like Myspace but devoted specifically to musicians," Vickers said. "I recommend it to everyone I meet because it's such a great way to get feedback on your music."

As Stereofame's February 2010 Artist of the Month, Vickers will get valuable exposure to an international audience in addition to a $1,000 prize. Stereofame is a one-of-a-kind community where artists are judged objectively by the listening audience. Artists gather more points as they rise in rank and refer their fans from other sites. Plus, artists can sell their music here, too, so they're getting serious points while making money, something iTunes doesn't offer! Listeners are also rewarded for their input, as they can earn points for listening to a song and giving it a "thumbs up or down," and writing thoughtful reviews. They can help talented artists get the attention they deserve by signing artists to their virtual record label and then promoting their signed artists to their friends. Of course, fans get tons of points for buying music and bringing people to the site, too. All these points can be cashed in for various prizes such as iPods, musical equipment, gift cards and more.

Think you've got what in takes to be Stereofame's next Artist of the Month? Then go to Stereofamecom and upload three songs to www.Stereofame.com/contest/aom. And if you're a fan, log on to Stereofame.com today to help some of tomorrow's biggest and brightest stars get heard and earn some sweet prizes at the same time!

May Artist of the Month

Stereofame, the pioneering online social music game, has chosen Boston-based band Vivian Darkbloom as their Artist of the Month

Borrowing their name as a homage to Vladamir Nabokov while giving a nod to his book, Lolita, the band lives up to Nabokov's idea of having an alter ego with their uninhibited rocked-out stage performances yet somewhat shy & intellectual personas offstage.

Vivian Darkbloom is comprised of graduate students Rob Morris (MIT) on vocals, Cristiano Castellitto (Berkeley) on drums, and Brian Skerratt (Harvard) on bass and vocals.

Morris's studies at MIT in media arts and sciences have influenced the band’s live show with his innovating usage of a Wii remote attached to his black Fender guitar. Through a fairly simple hack, he is able to turn the way the guitar is tilted into sound modifications on stage.

The band discovered Stereofame on Twitter: "I saw a positive shout-out for Stereofame and decided to try them," said Morris. "We're thrilled we were chosen and we plan to invest our $1,000.00 prize money into our summer tour." Their current EP, "Let's Become Machines" is available for download on the recently launched Stereofame music store.

The Stereofame Artist of the Month contest is the hottest tool for independent talent to gain international exposure, get serious objective written reviews and win a $1,000.00 cash prize. Monthly winners also qualify for the Artist of the Year contest, where $5,000.00 is up for grabs, along with other promotional exposure. There’s also competition for the listeners where the more votes they post, the more chances they have at a 10,000 point prize! The more points the artists and listeners earn, the more they can cash in for killer rewards like iPhones, surfboards and PlayStations.

Artists can enter next month’s Artist of the Month Contest by submitting up to three songs to www.Stereofame.com/contest/artist-of-the-month.html.

In today's evolving music scene, it's an exciting time to be an artist and a fan, especially at Stereofame, where they both get exactly what they deserve. The chance to have a voice and have it be heard!

April Artist of the Month - New Jersey singer/songwriter Justina Carubia

25 year old Justina Carubia is the latest artist to be recognized in Stereofame.com's popular Artist of the Month contest.

Justina has been playing guitar and writing her own songs since she was 18. When browsing through Gogirls.com she came upon a positive review for Stereofame and decided to setup a profile for herself. "I was only on there about a month when I submitted myself for the contest - I wasn't expecting to win anything so fast! I can’t believe how many friend requests I get on my other sites from people that are saying they first saw me on Stereofame."

Justina recently relocated to Los Angeles to pursue her music career. She plans on using her $1,000.00 prize to record more songs for a full length cd. Songs from her current EP, "Break of Day", can be downloaded at http://www.stereofame.com/justinamusic. Her track "Am I the Only One?" will also be featured in Stereofame's 11-song Album of the Month for April, available at a special price for all Stereofame members.

The Stereofame Artist of the Month contest is the hottest tool for independent talent to gain international exposure, get serious objective written reviews and win a $1,000.00 cash prize. Monthly winners qualify for the upcoming Artist of the Year contest, where $5,000.00 is up for grabs, along with other promotional exposure. There’s also competition for the listeners where the more votes they post, the more chances they have at a 10,000 point prize! The more points the artists and listeners earn, the more they can cash in for killer rewards like iPhones, surfboards and PlayStations.

Artists can enter next month's Artist of the Month Contest by submitting up to three songs to http://www.stereofame.com/contest/artist-of-the-month.html

Stereofame combines the social networking aspects of the popular MySpace and Facebook web sites with the auction functions of eBay and creates a game where both listeners and artists compete for points that can lead to valuable rewards ranging from mountain bikes to iPhones.

Stereofame Artist Frankie Leigh Partners with Big Picture High Schools

Stereofame artist Frankie Leigh was discovered by aspiring filmmaker, Graham Wheeler, on Stereofame.com. He contacted her to see if she would be interested in having him make a music video for her song "That's the Way it Goes". She agreed and ended up getting involved in his high school mentoring program.

Video explores why the real-world internship, mentor-student relationship works so well in the model of education for high school students. Ultra-low drop-out rates and high college acceptance are the hallmarks of schools such as the East Bay Met School. Advisor Mary R. Vieira, Ed.M speaks interspersed with music by recording artist Frankie Leigh (a Big Picture school mentor) and scenes of music video cinematography by 16 year old student Graham Wheeler.

"Like Dandelion Dust" Movie Soundtrack Contest Winner Announcement

The Stereofame "Like Dandelion Dust" Movie Soundtrack Contest would like to thank the Stereofame music voting community, all entrants and judges.

WINNING ARTIST

Hank Grant

Hank Grant and Co-Songwriter Bill Hail will be flown next week, courtesy of Stereofame, to Palm Springs, California for the International Movie Festival and viewing of the World Premier of Like Dandelion Dust. We've been told be the production company that Hank's song "What I Wouldn't Give" will be featured for about 15 - 20 seconds in one of the early scenes of the movie. Stereofame will be there to videotape Hank's reaction to winning the contest and being featured in the movie.

Contest Note:
Stereofame worked tirelessly with the production company in a failed attempt to award the winner from one of the entry contestants. The Director ultimately chose to exercise a provision in our agreement and contest rules that, as a last resort, enabled all Stereofame artists to be eligible. The Producer stated that the genre of the scene required a country musician. Otherwise, Kitchie Nadal would have been the winner. As a result, Stereofame is electing to recognize her accomplishment of being selected as a finalist and we are awarding her $1,000 as a consolation prize. Stereofame looks forward to continuing to work with motion picture production companies to provide similar contests in the future and we plan to announce our next one very soon.

WINNING LISTENER

bobbio

Stereofame Label "bobbio" has won a trip to the Film premier, including round-trip air transportation and hotel accommodations.

Stereofame looks forward to continuing to work with motion picture production companies to provide similar contests in the future and we plan to announce our next one very soon.

About Stereofame Artist of the Month Music Reviews

The Stereofame Artist of the Month Music Reviewing system is designed to allow all artists entered in the contest an equal opportunity to be heard and scored by the Stereofame community.

As a music reviewer, you want to review as many songs as possible, plus leave well-constructed written comments to be considered for a "star review" badge. "Star reviews" count considerably more than standard reviews and can influence the final scoring for an artist.

Each music review you submit creates a score for that song. The artists with the highest scores are forwarded to the Stereofame Judges Panel where the winner will be selected.

For more details on how the music reviews work, watch the Stereofame Music Reviews Screencast or read the written instructions instead.

Post a comment and let us know what you think of the music reviewing system!

SF Rank Update: Check Your Stereofame Rank Status

SF Rank Update: Check Your Stereofame Rank Status
A Stereofame Rank update was released today and Stereofame members may see fluctuating SF Ranks. SF Rank is considered a benchmark of popularity and all members seek to have a low SF Rank. An SF Rank update happens once every few months to maintain quality results for music fans seeking to discover new musical talent. This update focused mainly on ranking artists based on broader musical appeal rather than gameplay. (Note: Re-ranking of artists does impact the ranking of the Labels to which they are signed, see details below.)

What do you mean by gameplay vs. broad music appeal?
In short, broad music appeal means that you have a larger fan base. An artist with 10 fans each voting every day isn't as influential as an artist with 70 fans each voting once a week; same numbers of votes, but the second has a broader appeal so will rank higher.

How does this update impact my Label's SF Rank?
Labels are ranked based upon the success of the artists that they have signed. Check the SF Rank status of each artist on your Label. If any of their SF Ranks have changed significantly, you may want to think about getting some fresh talent on your Label.

What about my points?
No changes are being made to the point system, and Stereofame members may view artist and label points on any member’s profile page.

What is SF Rank?
Stereofame displays artist popularity by SF rank rather than points. Similar to Google's "Page Rank," SF rank is based on listener popularity. The more popular the artist is based on thumbs up and other actions (as performed by the listeners), the higher the SF rank of the artist. This will ensure that artists are ranked based on actions performed by the listeners, and not by the actions performed by the artists. With SF rank, Stereofame members solely determine which artists are the most popular.

SF Rank is also applied to Labels. Labels are ranked based upon the success of the artists that they have signed and that success is determined by Stereofame members. This will ensure that labels who are really good at picking out great artists rise to the top of the rankings.

SF Rank does not affect the point system.

Bottom line: the best artists and the best labels rise to the top and the SF ranking is determined by Stereofame members.

Stereofame Abuse
Staff members and the Stereofame community monitor activity on the site and flag those attempting to 'game' the system. If a Stereofame member has been flagged and found to be violating the game rules, points gaining through those efforts will be removed in addition to probation from the site. Fore more detail, please read the Stereofame Terms & Conditions, Section 10.

Post a comment and let us know what you think of this update!

Pulse - Local artist finds fame through new social networking game

Written by Adam T. Rossi
http://www.saratogatodayonline.com

This article comes from Saratoga TODAY, the community’s comprehensive, dynamic weekly newspaper.

Over the course of the last decade, the record industry has all but collapsed due to its failure to capitalize on the most recent trends in technology.

Nonetheless, there is a new website that looks to take advantage of today’s technologies and revolutionize the failing industry through the creation of an exciting new social network titled “Stereofame.”

The website combines popular social networks like MySpace with the auction functions of eBay to create a game where both listeners and artists compete for points they can cash in to receive prizes.

One area artist who is already taking advantage of the online phenomenon is Justin West. West, who records under the pseudonym Obi das, found out about the website through an obscure link he happened to come across while searching the web. The more he learned about the company and started listening to other people’s music, he admits he found the game to be a great idea.

FAQ: What is Label Rank?

Label rank is the sequential order in which you signed a particular artist. For example, on your profile page, if you see "Label Rank #1" next to a particular artist, then you were the 1st label to sign that artist.

We just added this as a feature on the site. Post a comment and let us know what you think!!

Congratulations!

Congratulations to the following 15 artists who accumulated the most positive votes during the Listener voting period for the "Like Dandelion" Movie Soundtrack contest. All Stereofame songs by each artist will be forwarded to the film's production company for consideration and a final winner will be chosen for inclusion in the film.

Although the contest was designed specifically for artists in the USA, Stereofame members overwhelmingly voted for additional artists from around the world who placed in the top 10. Additionally, Stereofame is quickly becoming a world music destination vs. a USA exclusive destination with over 50 artists from non-US countries. Therefore, we will also include these artists, as well as the top 10 US artists, to the production company.

Thank you to all the artists for who participated in the contest and best of luck to the finalists!

Prizes:

Stereofame Release Notes - v0.3

Stereofame is the Social Music Game where artists and fans gain points playing the game and cash them in on great rewards.

These Release Notes cover what's new, login instructions, game rules, known issues and frequently asked questions about Stereofame.

Give us your feedback through this feedback form.

What's New in Stereofame v0.3

Release Date:
May 16, 2008

Listener Login Update:
User login usernames will change for all members that signed up as Listeners on Stereofame before 5/17/08. Login usernames for this member type have been migrated to the label name.

So, if previously, your Listener username was "Jonny-B-Listener" and your Label was "Jonny-B-Label", your new login username is "Jonny-B-Label".

Passwords are unchanged.
Usernames are always lowercase.

Scoring:
A dynamic scorecard is now keeping track of your points and rewarding you on the spot for gaming actions. The Rules of the Game have changed dramatically that allow new ways to gain points, so be sure to read them. What's cool is that certain actions count for points immediately while other actions pay off for you over and over again... like a good investment. Bookmark this page: All the ways to rack up points.

Rules:
Game rules have been rewritten to answer a lot of questions. To get the most out of Stereofame, read them. You'll thank us later.

Labels and Listeners Become One:
To improve the game, we have combined the Listener and Label profiles into one member. Current members that had Listener and Label profiles will now have just one Label page to manage. New members to Stereofame will enter the game at a Listener level and can upgrade to a Label after they have earned 250 points.

Drop an artist from your Label:
Labels can now remove an artist from their label to open up slots for newly discovered talent. Removing an artist from a label will cost to 200 points (the earlier the artist was signed by the label, relative to other labels, the more points it takes to remove an artist).

Bands can play too:
Artists can now play the game and earn more points just for working their profile and playing the game. If you're an artist on Stereofame, definitely check out the Rules... you'll be impressed.

Some of the new ways for artists to gain points: Listen and vote on music, update your Billboard, add tags to the site, upload a new song.

Stereofame Auction House:
Artists and Listeners may bid on rewards at the Auction House with their points. There are a fixed number of rewards that are available to the highest bidder. There may or may not be a minimum bid required. Like eBay, the auction ends at the time designated for the item being bid upon.

Points and Rewards History:
You can view your total points earned, point balance, rewards redeemed, and how and when you obtained these points and rewards by going to the Points tab on your profile page.

Contests:
In addition to the ongoing Stereofame game, artists and listeners may participate in various contests. While the game in continuous, a contest is for a fixed period of time and usually 30 – 90 days in length. Check out our current Stereofame Contests!
